When were dental veneers invented?
Dental veneers are very popular with patients at Spa dentaire Laurier. They are also popular in North America and Europe, where they have become an optimal treatment option in cosmetic dentistry. And with good reason! They’re appreciated for their versatility, thinness, durability and non-invasiveness. But, as I’m sure you’ll agree, what makes them more popular than ever is that they actually mimic natural teeth. Let’s take a look at the history of dental veneers, from the Hollywood smile to today’s dental veneers.
Hollywood smile!
Dental veneers are often associated with the Hollywood Smile. Who else but movie stars could have created this need for a seductive smile that boosts self-confidence and reflects beauty? Photo shoots, movies, previews, magazine covers and autograph signings: there’s no denying that these stars had to have ultra-white smiles with perfectly aligned, radiant teeth.
The 1920s
Historically, the way to correct the aesthetics of front teeth was to place crowns. In 1928, Dr. Charles Pincus, a famous California dentist, broke new ground by inventing the first prototype of dental veneers as we know them today. The majority of his patients were celebrities from the world of film and entertainment who wanted to present themselves with perfect teeth.
His procedure involved fixing an acrylic material to the front surface of the teeth with a special adhesive. However, Dr. Pincus’ veneers used a denture adhesive that was neither strong nor durable. As its lifespan was temporary, actors and actresses returned to their real, less brilliant smiles at the end of the day.
The 30s and 40s
Although progress was slower during these two decades, interest in this dental treatment continued to grow. Not only were celebrities clamoring for more, but there were also ordinary people who wanted to achieve a more beautiful smile than the one bequeathed to them by Mother Nature! Thanks to advances in technology, veneers have evolved from acrylic to porcelain. What remained to be resolved was the case of the bonding agent (the adhesive), which provided little or no resistance to the wear of the cementing resin.
The 1950s
After much trial and error, a dentist by the name of Dr. Michael Buonocore discovered that bonding would solidify and resist wear more effectively by lightly etching the enamel of the target tooth. It was then that a way of making the bonding surface strong enough for permanent attachment of porcelain dental veneers was discovered.
Dental veneers today
Porcelain dental veneer technology is now so advanced that treatment can be completed in just one or two days, depending on the case. Their lifespan has increased from a few days to an average of 10 or 20 years, depending on use. And it’s almost impossible to perceive that they’re not your natural teeth.
Another major advantage is that they can even be replaced within this timeframe, should there be: cracks, leaks, chipping, discoloration, cavities, a narrowing of the gum line, or damage caused by injury or teeth grinding.
Popular for their versatility, thinness and durability
Dental veneers can solve all kinds of dental problems: gaps between teeth, misaligned teeth, teeth with deformities, worn teeth or teeth that are too dark. Because they’re permanently bonded to the front surface of your teeth, they can improve their shape, position and color.
When properly adapted to your chewing style, the shape of dental veneers can also have a profound impact on the appearance of your face. It can restore your smile’s seductive potential and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
