You no longer have to wait weeks for a natural-looking dental crown. Spa dentaire Laurier’s “Dental Crowns in One Visit” procedure restores broken or worn teeth beutifully and effectively in a short time.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown, sometimes called a “cap”, is a fixed prosthesis used to cover or restore a damaged, weakened or devitalized tooth. It completely envelops the visible part of the tooth and aims to restore its shape, size, function and aesthetic appearance.
What types of dental crowns are there?
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:
- Ceramic or porcelain: Offers a natural, aesthetic appearance close to natural teeth. Ideal for visible teeth, but slightly more fragile. At Laurier Dental Spa, we create your own dental crowns. They are made of IPS e.max porcelain with the help of CEREC CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) dental technology.
- Metal: Highly resistant and durable, metal crowns are often used for posterior teeth. However, its unattractive appearance limits its use to inconspicuous areas.
- Ceramo-metallic: Combines a metal interior for strength and a ceramic outer layer for esthetics.
- Resin: Mainly used as a temporary solution. Less durable than other materials.
What are the advantages of dental crowns in one visit?
- Convenient: Dr. Comeau has CEREC technology in his dental clinic. Unlike traditional crowns that require two visits, this procedure makes it possible to fabricate and shape a custom-designed crown on the same day while you wait.
- Comfort: Since the crown is placed the same day the tooth is prepared, there’s no need to wear a temporary crown between appointments. Temporary crowns can irritate the gums and become unstable, even coming off at awkward moments.
- Composition: One-visit crowns are metal-free. They are made of the highest quality ceramic and have a completely natural appearance.
- Precision: CAD/CAM technology uses 3D videos produced by an optical scan of your teeth. The computer then fabricates a dental restoration that precisely matches your natural tooth and chewing pattern to provide excellent protection and optimum comfort.
The procedure for fitting dental crowns
A crown is generally fitted in two stages:
- Tooth preparation: The dentist reduces the size of the damaged tooth to accommodate the crown. An impression is taken to make a custom crown. A temporary crown is fitted until the final one is ready.
- Final fitting: Once the permanent crown is ready, it is fitted and fixed with dental cement under local anaesthetic.
How long does dental crown last?
Treat your dental crown like a natural tooth. Floss daily and brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally with an electric toothbrush. This will help prevent possible gum disease or new decay. If you pay attention to your dental hygiene, this type of crown can last between 10 and 20 years. Above all, let Dr. Comeau know if you grind your teeth or tend to clench them. The pressure from grinding or clenching can damage your crown. We will offer you solutions to help you preserve your crowns. For more information, call us at 514 273-3818.
