Anxiety Free Dental Treatments

Dental Care Without the Anxiety
Feeling nervous about going to the dentist is more common than you might think. For some people it is mild uneasiness. For others, fear of pain, needles, dental sounds, or a previous negative experience can make it hard to even book an appointment.
At Spa dentaire Laurier on avenue Laurier Ouest, we offer sedation dentistry to help make treatment feel calmer and more manageable. Different levels are available depending on your needs, from light relaxation with nitrous oxide to deeper sedation. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable enough to get the care you need without fear standing in the way.
When Dental Anxiety Gets in the Way
Dental anxiety affects people in different ways. You may feel nervous before an appointment, have trouble sleeping the night before, or notice physical symptoms such as dry mouth, sweating, or an increased heart rate. Some people avoid appointments altogether because treatment feels overwhelming. Common concerns include:
Avoiding care can let smaller concerns become harder to manage over time. Sedation dentistry gives you another way to approach treatment, with added support to help you feel more relaxed throughout your visit.
Different patients need different levels of support.
Different patients need different levels of support. Options range from light relaxation to deeper sedation, and we help determine which approach fits your comfort level and the treatment you need.

Nitrous Oxide
The lightest option. The gas is delivered through a soft nose piece and starts to relax you within the first few minutes. You stay fully conscious and able to communicate, just calmer. Nitrous oxide can be added to many appointments, including cleanings. Local anesthetic may still be used when needed. Once treatment is done, the gas is turned off, its effects wear off quickly, and you can drive yourself to and from the appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
A deeper level of relaxation, helpful for moderate to severe anxiety or a fear of needles. The medication is taken by mouth and makes you feel very sleepy, more like dreaming or a light nap, though you stay conscious. It lasts several hours, so more treatment can often be completed in one visit. Local anesthetic is still used when needed, but only after you are sedated. Most patients remember little to nothing of the appointment. You will need someone to drive you to and from your visit, and there are precautions to follow beforehand.
IV Sedation
A deeper level of sedation using medication delivered through a vein, maintained as long as treatment requires. It may suit patients who need deeper sedation or find it hard to tolerate treatment while fully alert. Local anesthetic is still used as needed. Because it involves an intravenous line, patients who are especially fearful of needles may prefer another option.
General Anesthesia
Treatment completed while fully unconscious, administered by an anesthesia specialist with specialized equipment and monitoring. It is often used when a large amount of treatment is needed in one visit, particularly for children. You will need a ride to and from the appointment and specific instructions beforehand. Spa dentaire Laurier does not provide general anesthesia in-office, but we arrange it with a specialist when needed.

Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?
Most healthy patients may be candidates. Talk with us about sedation if you:
- Have had a difficult dental experience in the past
- Feel anxious about dental treatment
- Are afraid of needles or have trouble getting numb
- Feel uncomfortable with dental sounds or the smell of the office
- Have been delaying treatment because of fear
- Want to feel more comfortable during a longer appointment
You do not need to feel embarrassed about being nervous. Dental anxiety is very real, and our role is to help you find a way to receive care that feels more manageable.
Is Sedation Right for You? A 2-Minute Self-Check
Think about how you would answer these:
- How would you feel if you had a dental appointment tomorrow?
- How do you feel in the waiting room before your turn?
- How do you feel when the dentist prepares the drill?
- How do you feel when instruments come out for a cleaning?
If your honest answer to any of these is “afraid,” “very frightened,” or “so anxious I could feel physically sick,” sedation dentistry is worth a conversation.

What to Expect
Your experience depends on the level of sedation. With nitrous oxide you stay fully conscious and recover quickly. With oral sedation you stay conscious but much sleepier and may remember very little, and transportation is required. IV sedation creates a deeper, longer-maintained state. Local anesthetic may still be used to keep the treatment area comfortable. Before your appointment we explain how to prepare and any precautions for your sedation type. Most importantly, nothing begins until you feel comfortable and ready.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are among the safest options used in a dental office for healthy patients. Your dentist reviews your health history first and monitors you throughout.
Will I be asleep?
With nitrous oxide and oral sedation you stay conscious and able to respond, just deeply relaxed. Only general anesthesia makes you fully unconscious, and that is arranged off-site with a specialist.
Will I remember the appointment?
Most oral sedation patients remember little to nothing. Nitrous oxide patients usually recall the visit but feel calm during it.
Can I drive myself home?
After nitrous oxide, yes. After oral or IV sedation, no. You will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment.
Does it work if I am afraid of needles?
Yes. Oral conscious sedation is taken by mouth, and any local anesthetic is given only after you are sedated, so needle fear is not a barrier.
Is sedation covered by insurance or the RAMQ?
Coverage varies by plan and procedure. Our team will review your options with you before treatment.
